that, thanks to the rest on the passage home, I am, to a great

extent, restored to health, but my doctor warns me that a return

to the climate of Hongkong, under similar conditions, would in

all probability result in a recurrence.

A. I need hardly point out the inevitable

damage to Imperial interests which is bound to result from such

treatment of the officer in charge of the harbour of a Colony

like Hongkong, whose very existence depends upon its shipping alone. Should that shipping be unduly interfered with, or excessive restrictions or expenses be placed upon it, there is now little, since the advent of the many Chinese railways now under construction, or already finished, to prevent it from deserting Hongkong for some other port of call, which would be the death blow of the Colony.
